Citation

Definition of Citation

The term citation refers to a notice or an order by a court issued to person to appear before the court. This is usually because of a minor crime such as drinking or smoking where prohibited, traffic violation, or possession of illegal substances.

Citation Explained

If the person receiving the citation fails to appear in court, a formal warrant for their arrest may be issued by the court. In civil cases where presence of a particular person is considered necessary by the court, a citation or a subpoena may be issued to demand appearance.
