Dicta is a legal opinion that is verbalized by a judge in an action that is superfluous or extra to the judgment. It is the combination of all the extra statements that a judge may make when giving a ruling that is additional to the original ruling, such as an opinion.
Dicta is not legally binding; it is only the ruling itself that is binding. A judge may make a remark that they would have sentenced lighter or heavier had the law allowed them to, but dicta amounts to an opinion given on a subject by someone experienced in the matter.
