In camera is a Latin term meaning "in chambers."
When used in a legal context, it refers to a private hearing. Such hearings or discussions are usually held in the office(s) where the judge handles official matters outside of the courtroom. These discussions or hearings may also be held in the courtroom after the jury and/or spectators have been asked to leave.
There are several reasons why a conversation or hearing may be held in camera. One reason would be to determine the admissibility of sensitive or controversial information. In-camera hearings are also held to shield the parties involved from public scrutiny, or if there is reason to believe that having a discussion before the jury would influence its decision.
Due to the sensitivity and emotional nature of the topics at hand, in-camera hearings are often held in family law cases.
