A criminal is someone who is guilty of committing a crime. There are many different types of crime that can result in a person being labelled as a criminal. For example, a person who committed an armed robbery could be called a criminal. A person who committed an assault can be called a criminal. The word criminal can also be used as an adjective which refers to anything involving crime.

Criminals are basically just people who have done things that are classified as crimes. Criminals are frequently sent to prison or jail as a consequence for their actions. However, if a criminal has committed a serious crime, such as murder, then they could face the death penalty. Not all states have the death penalty. The severity of the sentence that a criminal receives after they are found guilty is proportional to the severity of the crime. Various periods of jail time are very common sentences.
