Definition of Imprison

The term imprison refers to confining someone in jail or any other prison. Person is usually sent to jail or prison as a result of a court order. The common types of imprisonment or confinement include private house or a prison (jail). Imprisonment doesn't have to just be jail. False imprisonment can take place when someone is held against their will.

Detention (usually forcible) of a person to any particular area and the act of being arrested by a police officer can also be referred to as imprisonment. A person can be imprisoned either legally or illegally. Legal imprisonment is usually the result of a crime while illegal imprisonment is called false imprisonment.
