Indecent Exposure

Definition of Indecent Exposure

Indecent exposure is the act of revealing genitalia in front of another person for the purpose of shocking them or for sexual arousal. In most places, the act of exposing oneself can be interpreted in different ways, and not all would be construed as being indecent. The basis of indecent exposure is that the act is done for sexual gratification rather than simply being the act of exposing oneself in public. For example, when someone urinates on the street, even if they are seen and are exposed, it does not qualify as indecent exposure because the purpose of the act was not for any sexual fulfillment.

Indecent Exposure Explained

Indecent exposure is commonly found in district court and criminal court matters. It is often related to other charges such as public intoxication, disorderly conduct, or creating a public nuisance. The penalties for indecent exposure vary from country to country. They might be considered lax in the United States and most of Europe, where the act usually carries a fine or short jail term. In other areas of the world, the act is considered far more serious and can attract severe jail time penalties or even expulsion from the country (if the person committing the act is a foreign national).
