This is a broad term used to describe any activity as defined by federal law that is deliberately undertaken to hinder a lawful proceeding. It includes but is not limited to written and oral threats; the destruction or manipulation of evidence; or any other efforts made to sway the outcome. It is illegal to engage in any such activity.



Obstruction of Justice Explained

Obstruction of justice can occur during an investigation, as someone is being arrested, or during court proceedings.

Some common examples of this crime are making false police reports; lying to the local, state or federal authorities; or hiding or withholding incriminating material during the course of an investigation. Others include physical interference as someone is being taken into custody; and frightening or trying to frighten a judge, attorney or witness in a criminal or civil case.
