Prisoner

Definition of Prisoner

A prisoner is a person who is being held by law enforcement either prior to being sentenced or after being sentenced while serving their sentence.

While incarcerated, a prisoner is unable to make their own decisions in terms of their daily lives. Law enforcement is responsible for prisoners' activities, such as going to the court for hearings or activities within the prison.

Prisoner Explained

A prisoner has certain legal rights that are laid out in federal law and vary by the severity of the crime for which the prisoner is being held, as well as within the type of facility that the prisoner is being held in. For instance, prisoners in maximum-security prisons have more rules to follow than prisoners in local jails.
