Torture

Definition of Torture

Torture is the deliberate causing of pain and suffering, whether physical or psychological, in order to extract information.

Torture excludes lawful acts where pain and suffering is intentionally caused, such as the death penalty in states that allow the death penalty.

Torture is illegal in the United States and in international law.

Torture Explained

Even the military and the government are not allowed to use torture. The military does, however, sometimes use "enhanced interrogation techniques," which are not the same as torture.

Those who are caught committing acts of torture can face punitive consequences from the judicial system.

There is frequent debate among politicians and public officials about whether techniques such as waterboarding are torture. Opponents of torture argue that torture makes America sacrifice its values for short-term gains.
