Work Permit

Definition of Work Permit

A work permit is a temporary restricted license provided to individuals whose licenses have been suspended as a result of a driving while impaired (DWI) or driving under the influence (DUI) charge. A work permit specifies that the driver is only allowed to drive to and from work. The idea behind this work permit is that it applies restrictions on the driver without creating undue punishment in the form of an economic hardship.

Work Permit Explained

In most states, if an individual is found to be driving with a blood acohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or more, that person will be charged with a DUI/DWI. In many cases, this charge comes with the revokation of the individual's driver's license. However, such individuals may still apply for a restricted license which is generally only granted for travel to and from work. A similar restricted license may also be issued to students who have to attend classes or exams. In this case, the license is called an education permit.
