Date last insured refers to the date a person was last eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. In claiming Title II Disability Insurance Benefits, adjudicators will not consider a claim if it occurred after the claimant's date last insured. This is the last day the insured met disability insurance status requirements.
There can be circumstances where there is more than one date last insured. For instance, a person has to be fully insured at the time they meet the statutory definition of blindness, whereas a person seeking disability must be fully insured not only at the time of the disability, but also at present. A person may also have multiple dates last insured if they had coverage for both Medicare Qualified Government Employee and Disability. Another example of multiple dat last insured involves a person with an unsteady work history, and arises because of the the latter's breaks in insured status.
