Disability law refers to the regulations enforced in a jurisdiction to prevent discrimination against disabled individuals. In the United States, disability law is regulated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was enacted in 1990 by the U.S. Congress.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990 and was later amended, with changes effective on January 1, 2009. Similar to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the ADA prohibits discrimination against U.S. citizens on the basis of disability. The disabilities included in the ADA include several mental and physical disabilities as well as alcoholism. However, disabilities like compulsive gambling, sexual behavior disorder, pyromania, and several others are excluded from the ADA.
