Adultery is consensual sex between a married individual and an individual who is not their spouse. It is considered an objectionable act on moral, religious, and social grounds. It is also an offense under law in several jurisdictions. It also classifies as a valid ground for divorce. Depending upon the jurisdiction, adultery comes under family law or criminal law.
As of 2014, adultery is classified as a criminal offense in 21 states in the United States.; the U.S. military also treats it as a ground for court martial. Nine states in the United States allow lawsuits to be brought against an individual considered responsible for the breakdown of a marriage under the tort action of 'alienation of affections.’
