Child Protective Services (CPS) is a federally mandated office that has offices in every county and state in the USA.
The purpose of CPS is to monitor at-risk children and families, and ensure that the well-being of the child is being taken care of. CPS has the ability to remove children from their parents' homes and place them in foster care, or ultimately up for adoption if they deem it is in the child's best interests.
CPS has the goal of keeping families together, i.e. it will work with the family to be reunited, whenever possible, before taking any other step. This might be done through classes relating to parenting or anger management.
CPS agencies are governed by various federal laws, including the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act.
