Family court is a trial court with limited jurisdiction. It hears cases and decides matters related to family law. These courts deal solely with cases related to domestic issues such as divorce, child custody, and domestic violence. Depending upon the jurisdiction, family courts also deal with cases related to incompetence and guardianship.
Disputes arising in a family are different from civil disputes. They can't be resolved in a similar fashion. A family court is a court that deals only in cases relevant to family law. In most family courts, the trier of fact is a judge instead of a jury. The first family court in the United States was established in 1910. All states have their own family courts. The laws and systems utilized differ from state to state.
