Separation

Definition of Separation

A separation is when spouses do not want to live together anymore and wish to be separated, but do not want to go through the divorce process. This is usually done out of religious reasons. However, it can be done for any number of personal reasons including a desire not to split assets at the time of separation. Separations are becoming less common with the adoption of no-fault divorce, but they remain an option for married couples.

Separation Explained

A separation is done when people either cannot go through with a traditional divorce for religious reasons or when people do not wish to appear as though their marriage is definitely over. Separations are used in cases where reconciliation could occur. There are proportionately few separations as compared to divorces.
