Supervised Visitation

Definition of Supervised Visitation

Supervised visitation is when a parent who does not have custody of his or her child visits his or her child under the supervision of an adult who is approved by the court. Supervised visits are a way for non-custodial parents to see their children and vice versa in a manner that is safe and appropriate.

Supervised Visitation Explained

A parent can lose custody of his or her children for a number of reasons. The loss of custody commonly occurs following a divorce, when full custody is awarded to one parent because the other has demonstrated a failure to uphold proper parenting duties. Reckless behavior such as drug and alcohol abuse, negligence, etc. can lead to the loss of custody. However, the court often decides that supervised visits with the non-custodial parent would be in the child's best interests. So, such visits are often arranged by the courts.
