Many car insurance plans offer personal injury protection (PIP), which is sometimes referred to as no-fault insurance or coverage.
PIP insures the driver and the driver’s passengers for physical injuries suffered in a car accident. PIP is typically used to cover costs for health care before health insurance is used.
Personal injury protection is also called no-fault insurance because, by the terms of the plan, PIP usually covers health care costs no matter who was at fault for the accident. This kind of protection can be especially important for drivers involved in an accident with a driver who does not have insurance.
Once a person with personal injury protection is injured in a car accident, the person will usually exhaust the limits of their PIP before invoking health insurance.
Some states require all drivers to carry PIP.
