The United States Patent and Trademark Office is the office that holds records of patents and trademarks allocated across the US. They also take applications to file a new trademark. This office is the final authority and a trademark or patent is only pending after an application until it is confirmed by the USPTO.
The main office of the USPTO is in Washington DC. There are satellite offices across the states in areas of high industry such as Detroit, Denver, and New York City. The patents and trademarks that are upheld by this office have a set lifespan. In some instances, the lifespan is up to 99 years. The lifespan must expire before it becomes possible to remake a product in the style of a patented product without breaking the law.
