Deleterious is something that causes instant harm or damage. The word is often used in divorce cases where children are involved or to describe injuries received in an accident.
An example of this would be that there is a deleterious effect on children whose parents are going through an acrimonious divorce. The children would be greatly suffering in some way in the eyes of the court because of the divorce.
